Animated music video for Galgo’s single “Garras Dadas”
Overview
"Garras Dadas" is the second single off of Galgo's third LP "Parte Chão".
"Parte Chão" is a follow-up LP to "Quebra Nuvens" (Galgo's second LP), in the sense that the band wanted to create a concept of organic VS digital dichotomy, that would span over two "sister" albums.
The overall plot of both albums is that this character (the pink anthropomorphic greyhound) lives in a world that is his own, however, this world is suddenly endangered by the approach of an electronic/digital storm that would destroy and convert it.
“Quebra Nuvens”, being more dense and rock oriented, represents the character's resistance and struggle against the storm.
”Parte Chão” is more electronic and dance oriented, it represents a world already converted, in which the character learns to accept and adapt.
I wanted to encapsulate the whole feeling purposed by both albums, and created a story where the character finds itself in this new destroyed and transformed world, confused and scared, unable to adapt and move on.
Process
Sketches
A project like this, or any project at all, would be completely impractical, borderline impossible really, without any paper support.
Writing down parts of the narrative, sketching quick ideas for characters, making to-do lists, or even just getting emotional and treating it like a diary.
Having a sketchbook is key to keeping everything organized and real.
Photogrammetry
Took the chance to experiment with something new in this project, and had some fun with photogrammetry.
Photogrammetry is the science of making measurements from photographs.
The input to photogrammetry is photography, and the output is typically a map, a drawing, or (in this case) a 3D model of some real-world object or scene.
Initial tests with household objects had a very destroyed and messy look, mainly due to poor photography material and lighting conditions.
However, this look felt right at home with the music’s concept and story. So, after further testing to refine the look, I used this technique to create various objects and environments for the video.
Animation / 3D Pipeline
The majority of the process is the classic 3D pipeline - modeling, texturing, rigging, animating, lighting and rendering.
Most of the modeling was done with simple shapes and Volume Based Modeling (VDB)
Rigging is composed mainly of Splines; Spline Wraps; IKs; simple Hierarchy; and occasional use of Xpresso.
Animated with love at 30fps
Promo and Social Media
Also part of the package is to create material for social media, to promote the upcoming release.
These can be Instagram posts and stories, video teasers or anything that may seem necessary.
In this occasion an AR filter was created for the band’s Instagram, featuring the main character with various facial expressions.
