Euro-Vision Collaboration

A visual homage to the 2019 Eurovision competition

Overview
Organized by The-Artery - a creative studio based inNnew York - Euro-Vision is a collaborative project with various artists/animators from all over the world.
It was an open call, which I found out through the Instagram of the artist Patrick Sluiter.

The project is described by the studio as such:

”The Euro-Vision project is a collaboration between 26 artists from all over Europe & the world to create our own interpretation and celebration of the renowned song competition, The Eurovision – Capitalizing on this year's (2019) Eurovision location, Israel, The Startup Nation - our theme was: Human & Machine”

“Ranging from 3D animation to stop-motion, the artists were invited to visualize what it means for humans and machines to operate as one. Is it peaceful? Violent? Organic? Or a mix of everything? Whatever it is, we know that music can always bring us together as one.”

The guidelines the artists were given in this project were:

  • A duration limit of 10 seconds

  • The animation must start and end on a match frame - a small circle on the center of the screen

  • Following the theme

Concept and Planning - Human & Machine
I took a somewhat direct approach to the Human & Machine theme.

It’s very important for me to always have narrative in my work, even if it’s in a very light way. So, with the 10 second limit guideline, this had to be done in a very concise and simple way.

I came up with having certain shapes communicate with each other, changing themselves in order to become one final composed shape. This would represent the collaboration between human and AI entities.

After settling on the initial concept, I started drawing quick storyboards to figure out the shots and their timing. As well as planning how the character would look like and how it would be rigged.

Concept - Environment and Sound
This being a homage to a musical competition, I also wanted to incorporate musical elements into my piece.

Thinking about the Machine part of the theme, synthesizers seemed like the most clear approach, and so, I inserted sound wave types - Sine and Saw waves - into the environment and prop design.
